Service Offerings:

Specialization in the Treatment of Trauma:

In the aftermath of high-stress incidents or experiences, there are often echoes of the past that manifest as "symptoms" which interfere with our ability to function at home, work, or school, to experience joy and intimacy in relationships, or to live in peace within ourselves.  The body predictably creates mechanisms to protect itself and minimize pain that over time may become increasingly problematic.  For many people, the use of trauma-specific therapies and a treatment approach that reflexively shifts as needed is essential to begin unravelling and releasing that which no longer serves us.  Some of the tools I draw from in the provision of trauma-specific therapy include:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Ego State Therapy / Parts Work
  • Sensory-based Interventions
  • Prolonged Exposure for PTSD
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy
  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

For each person, the goals of trauma-specific therapy should reflect what they are currently navigating in their healing journey.  This may entail the desensitization of trauma triggers, re-learning to regulate emotions, replacing problematic coping behaviours, and/or working toward an experience of life and self that brings you as close as possible to a place of wholeness.

Psychotherapy for Mood Disorders:

While some individuals who experience adverse events at some point in their lives will develop a traumatic stress disorder, many more will develop symptoms of mood disorders.  It is my pleasure to offer trauma-informed psychotherapy treatment for:

  • Depression
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Social Anxiety
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Additional tools I draw from in the provision of therapy for mood disorders include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

  • Behavioural Activation

  • Exposure and Response Prevention

  • Mindfulness

  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Many clients report positive outcomes from any one of these specific evidence-based therapies.  However, I am also able to integrate methods if needed to offer a more individualized treatment plan that targets a client's goals.  For example, where some psychotherapy treatments are best for symptom reduction and behavioural change, some clients will desire further interventions which facilitate deeper self-understanding and spiritual growth.  My preferred approach is to respect and cherish the inner wisdom of all clients regarding what they need to heal and to incorporate this into their treatment plan.

Counselling for Climate Distress:

In response to the ways climate change has begun to substantially impact mental health in our local population, I have been working to increase my capacity for supporting those who are experiencing high levels of climate-related grief and distress.  I have recently become affiliated with the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America to engage in community and learning related to this area of practice.  For someone seeking support of this kind, I can offer counselling that is non-pathologizing,  communal (we are in this together!), and about holding space for all emotions.

General Counselling:

Finally, I also offer general counselling support to address a wide range of challenging life events, such as:

  • miscarriage

  • burnout

  • divorce

  • parent/adult-child conflict

  • caregiver stress

  • life-threatening illness

  • disability

  • death of a loved one

In general counselling, a number of approaches may be used to support a person experiencing situational challenges, including grief support, communication coaching, psychoeducation, crisis intervention, problem solving, and resource referrals.
